Textual Analysis: Selling Sex to Survive

Selling Sex to Survive S1 E1 – 60 mins

Opening Sequence:

The opening sequence starts with a disclaimer and a narrator. This is bold to make the viewer aware that there may be scenes that are controversial and not of thee norm. A non-diegetic sound of a soundtrack and voiceover play whilst the visuals set a scene of the context of the documentary. We as a viewer can hear asynchronous sounds that make us feel disorientated and really subjects us to the documentary.

Equilibrium:

In this documentary about prostitution the first part of the documentary shows us a charity that are there to help these girls and this is s that viewers can feel that there are resolutions to the dark world.

Disruption:

The documentary slowly transitions itself to a continuous number of scenes that create a suspense and tension atmosphere. This showcases the actual context of the documentary and what prostitution is about. This engages audiences as they will be looking for a restored equilibrium so that they keep watching on. The disruption phase of this show includes many cut scenes and editing that makes the viewers on edge and not normal. Also, there is an emphasis of asynchronous sounds and low beat music that sets an unexpected mood.

Restored Order:

I have noticed that because the show is a series documentary it doesn't have a resolution at the end, I feel that this is because it wants viewers to watch the next episode till the research is found and questions have been answered.
