Textual Analysis:

'Millennials Stigma Documentary' is a narrated documentary where a girl looks at all factors of what it means to be a millennial. She explores different views and perspectives on millennials using facts and statistics that are seen in the documentary.

Duration: 51 mins

Characters: public members between 18-35, of all genders and ethnicity also features people that are not millennials to get a bigger, outside view of the generation

Location: Various places such as house rooms, outside locations like parks and schools

Style/Form: Documentary

There are many medium shots when interviewing the character, this allows viewers to see the location as well as feeling like they are having the conversations with the characters. There are multiple medium shots to allow the intimate connection and viewers are then engaged with the stories. These shots are used to allow viewers to focus on what characters are saying and very little setting is shown.

Being a documentary there are many hand held shots. I believe the choice of using this movement is to keep with the conventions of a documentary and the convention of realism. The movement of hand held camera shots also make viewers feel as if they are a part of the show as well as factoring in that documentaries are part a real life story.

What I am going to take from this documentary is how it uses various shots like long-shots to show locations and the environment to set a style for the documentary. I like how the context of the show covers stereotypes of millennials and what millennials mean to society by interviewing millennials and older generations who are not considered as millennials.

Treatment Sheet

The Audio Visual: Are you millennial?

Target Readership: Are you a millennial? is a one-of documentary about he stereotypes millennials. The viewers will be aged between 18-35, better known as millennials. This is because of the shows interaction with millennials, like interviews and re-enactments of anecdotes. Viewers of the show will fall into the C1/C2 socioeconomic grouping, his is because the show will be aired in evening where these groups would come back from work and have time to relax and watch a show that was related and aimed for them. However for the younger half of the millennials they may not be working, instead be in education or working part time. The context of the show is about the stereotypes of millennials, this means that those that watch would be able to relate with the stories in the documentary; including those that may show anti-social behaviour for example. The show is made to be controversial to target Channel's commission. This will bring a different flavour and hopefully newer viewers of millennials to Channel 5. Are you a millennial? is for millennials who really want to watch themselves! They must be ready to hear the stereotypes, whether good or bad.

Form and Style:  Are you a millennial? is an explorative documentary which contains of one-to-camera interviews questing the stereotypes of millennials and seeing if the stereotypes are true. Documentaries have this relation between interviewers and the public so I feel that it is important to include this element so that it is familiar to audiences so that they are comfortable. However I want to add a different style of an interviewing process where the interviewee is the main subject of the show and this is where audiences can get information from. The show is stylistically going to be simple. Also because it is an explorative documentary the show will consist of going into further research of the stereotypes in a unique form that audiences can understand.

Themes and Typical features: There will many typical features to this documentary. Every question asked would be researched to understand the main stereotypes of millennials. Every issue will include agenda's from education to technology and controversial topics such as politics to drugs. There will be a strong emphasis on the word 'millennial' and really reinforce the resolution that millennials should not be stereotyped and disapproved of. The show will have a strong influence on real life, up-to-date topics and some light-hearted comedy to keep the audience engaged. Are you a millennial? will have facts and figures stated to a transition where millennials are being questioned in the show. The shows theme will  be modern yet a slight twist as it will not be a typical documentary. Those that are questioned will be aged between 18-35 which is what the target audience will be too so that viewers can feel they are part of the show which is realistically documented about themselves.

Potential Advertisers: The show will be advertised on Channel 5 therefore Channel 5 would advertise this one-off documentary on their channel in between shows before the release date.

Editorial Team: The shows editorial team would be made up of young writers of different genders, ages between 18-35 and all ethnicity to make sure what is aired is also relatable to the target audience. The editors/writers will be able to regularly contribute their ideas to make the show better. As this is a one-off show it is important to narrow down the ideas and to finalise them so that the show is successful. The reason the team will be so diverse is that ideas need to be unique and verified.
