TV Listings/Factual and Fictional Research

Today I have decided to research on some of the programmes already showing on Channel 5 and ITV. This will help me develop my ideas of what I will be doing for my coursework.

I now want to include research on the fictional and factual programmes that both ITV and Channel 5 offer. I am going to include the most popular shows in my research as I feel there will already be enough detail and knowledge that I can find so that I am able to use for my course.

ITV
I went to the ITV website which I found to be helpful. I found that ITV is the largest commercial televising network in the UK.  They have a range of channels that present different genres; ITV, ITV2, ITV3, ITV4, ITVBe, CITV.

Factual-

Show: The Jeremy Kyle Show
Genre: Comedy, tabloid talk show
Time: 9:25am - 10:30am
Audience: 25-45 Female

Show: Good Morning Britain
Genre: Panel Show
Time: 6:00am - 8:30am
Audience: 30+ Female

Fiction-

Show: Coronation Street
Genre: Soap Opera
Time: 8:00pm - 8:30pm
Audience: Families

Show: Lethal Weapon
Genre: Crime Genre, Comedy
Time: 9:00pm - 9:45pm
Audience: 25+ Male

Channel 5
Channel 5 is not on a mass scale like ITV however it is still the third largest commercial channel. Other channels linked to Channel 5 are 5 Star, 5 USA, 5 Spike and My5.

Factual-

Show: The Wright Stuff
Genre: Debate
Time: 9:15am - 11:15am
Audience: 30+ both sex

Show: Shop Smart: Save Money
Genre: Documentary
Time: 8:00pm - 9:00pm
Audience: 30+ both sex

Fiction-

Show: Neighbours
Genre: Soap Opera
Time: 5:30pm - 6:00pm
Audience: Families 15+

Show: Suspects
Genre: Crime Drama
Time: 7:00pm - 8:00pm
Audience: 25+ Male

Conclusion

Whilst doing my research on ITV, I have found that more of the time appeal to a higher aged audience that primarily are women. Moreover, I have found in my research that shows that include audiences and viewers as part of the shows ie. panel shows tend to be more popular than fictional shows.

On the other hand, Channel 5 tend to broadcast documentary and have a varied range to target a wider audience. Channel 5 also have a few selection of Crime Drama. However I am appealed to make a documentary as Channel 5 is more suited to it.

Overall, I am more interested in Channel 5 and what it has to offer because I feel that producing an audio-visual of a documentary would be best suited to Channel 5. This is because from my previous research on commissions Channel 5 is looking to broadcast documentaries.

Week 1 Overview.

I am writing this post to evaluate on how and what I've been up to in week 1.
I have found myself a little behind in terms of staying on top of my action plan.
Above, is what I have set myself to do in week 1, however I have found myself completing a couple except for 'researching factual/fictional programmes and specific genre' and 'narrow down my options'. I feel like I should of included the research on factual/factual programmes when doing my institutions research on ITV and Channel 5. This would of help me complete the task all at once.

Therefore, this is why I believe I am behind on my tasks for week 1 because I am not able to narrow down my options without being able to do more of an in-depth research according to the brief.

This is why in week 2, which currently is now, I am catching up on this work so that I am able to narrow down my options by the end of this week. In my action plan I have left week 3 and week 4 blank. This is because I feel it is important to set tasks as I go a long so that I do not miss anything out. I will complete my week 2 task by mid-week3 and hopefully be on top of my action plan.

Institutions.

Here I have completed my week 1 plan on the research of the institutions of Channel 5 and ITV. Each institutions have different commission statements that I have found and will hopefully guide me into making an audio visual according to the brief.

The research on ITV, I researched all the channels that ITV broadcasts, therefore I can get a broad, varied and diverse range that best suits me and the brief.

Doing this research will hopefully narrow down my options in terms of what genre I want to do and the context of what my audio visual will be.

Action Plan.

I have now completed an action plan for my coursework. This action plan includes a temporary idea of what I should be working on during the given time to ensure I meet the brief and complete the tasks.

Highlighted blue boxes - These are tasks that I have set myself to work on the audio-visual where I have estimated that week 1 is where I have been introduced to the brief as well as starting up my blog and getting to grips with what is expected. I have also estimated 4 weeks for research/planning towards the work of my audio-visual. Next, I have given some time in the summer holidays to work on my coursework so that I will not be behind, this is a rough idea as I may find more time to work on the project o perhaps vice versa. Finally, I have given myself 4 weeks after summer to film and edit and ensure it is done.

Highlighted green boxes - After completing my audio-visual I will be moving on to the next task on my brief where I create a cross-media product; magazine. I gave myself 2 weeks to re-visit my aims and intentions sheet and research/planning towards creating a magazine. Moreover, I gave myself 4/5 weeks to complete a draft, create and edit a finishing piece.

Overall, I will use this action to keep track of where I am in the course and to evaluate what I have down every week. This will help me see what I have missed or perhaps what I could do more.

Brief Analysis.

The brief given, is a Television brief where I have to produce a new television programme in a factual or fictional genre of my choice. However I am told that this cross-media production must be related to either ITV or Channel 5 targeting an audience of millennials. I think that this brief is relatable to myself as I am a millennial and do watch shows on those broadcasters. Therefore, I feel that it will be easier to meet the brief as I already have a vibe of what should be in my media product and what perhaps do not fit in the style of ITV and/or Channel 5.

The second task is to produce a print. The brief explains how I need to make 3 pages where by a front cover and a double page spread feature is involved. This is a cross-media production that will be related to my audio visual sequence. I feel that this will be more challenging to me, even though I have worked with Photoshop I feel producing a high quality 'new lifestyle' magazine will be a challenge that I am excited to take. This is because I myself do not read magazines so I feel a lot of research and planning should be taken to ensure I meet the brief.

Till next time!

Intoduction.

My name is Ili Brooks. I am 17 years old and currently studying at Hills Road in Cambridge, doing my A-Levels. I am studying Business, Sociology and Media. This blog is about my Media Coursework that I will be doing from now till November.

I will use this blog to track my activity and progress during this coursework, it will enable me to see how far I am in the course as well as seeing how I have improved on myself.

The task for this coursework involves me producing a cross-media production of an audio visual and a print product. I am excited to do this as I love to produce audio visuals and to edit my work, I am also ready for the challenge of being able to do this in a set time.

See you soon!
